Apr 08, 2006· Lately I have been using 45 minute plaster (as used for gib-stopping on plasterboard walls) and it gives much more time to work but is not nearly as strong. To create bulk when scenicking I add sawdust to plaster (and colour it with acrylic paints) and that is very effective (although not so strong with the 45 minute plaster).

Plaster of Paris is manufactured by heating gypsum at 423K or 150o C/300o F. CaSO4·2H2O + heat → CaSO4·0.5H2O + 1.5H2O (discharged as steam) On heating gypsum at 423 K, it loses water molecules and becomes calcium sulfate hemihydrate. This product is known as the plaster of Paris.
Fibrous plastering is the installation and plastering of solid plaster of paris sheets re-enforced with fibres. Fibrous plaster is common in New Zealand buildings dating back as far as 1906. Fibrous plaster does not have a paper face like GIB® plasterboard and so it has exactly the same material on the face of the sheet as on the plastered join.
