The Kupferschiefer is a thin bituminous marl deposited under anoxic conditions in a stratified sea following a marine transgression. The Kupferschiefer is overlain by the Zechstein Limestone (Ca1) which, with its abundant fauna, was deposited under oxygenated waters.
