hdd drilling in dolomite

Reaming

The drill pipe is connected to the product pipe or conduit using a pull head or swivel. The swivel is used to prevent rotational torque from spinning the product pipe. A reamer is placed between the pull head and the drill string to keep the drill hole open. A schematic of the HDD reaming process is shown in Figure 1-6.

How to create a proposed HDD bore plan

For this reason, normally you would start this proposed bore plan with your first rod at -25%. To calculate the first rod depth, multiply the 10-ft rod by the current pitch of -25% (10 ft x -25% = x). This equals -2.5 ft (-0.8 m), which is the approximate depth change of the drill head once the full rod has been drilled into the ground.

Horizontal flow

The main role of drilling fluids in HDD applications is cleaning the borehole as it is drilled, to avoid a build-up of drilled cuttings on the low side of the hole. Equally important functions are promoting hole stability, and cooling and lubricating the tools and pipe for successful installation.

Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD)

The HDD Process The HDD method consists of two main stages, i.e. drilling a pilot hole and back reaming. After reaming is completed, the pipe is pulled in through the hole. The first stage involves drilling a pilot hole using a …

Soil Conditions

Yes, horizontal directional drilling (HDD) is possible in silt. HDD is a steerable trenchless technology used to install pipelines and conduits in areas with obstructions such as roads, railways, and rivers. HDD is commonly used in silt because it reduces the risks associated with excavation and provides a cost-effective solution.

Drilling and Steering

Positive-displacement motors are typically used in HDD operations. These motors generate torque and rotation at the drill bit from the flow output of the mud pump. Directional control is obtained by a small bend in the drill string just behind the cutting head.
