mixing sodium nitrate to refine gold

Pyrometallurgy: Roasting, Smelting, Refining & Electrowinning

First we have to convert the Copper to some salt that will not form an amalgam with Gold. Second, we have to give the Copper salt some way to "escape" from the Gold. Hey, that ain't no big problem for a Basement Chemist. O.K., now an easy, cheap, way to this is simply mix the Gold/Copper with an "oxidizing agent" such as Sodium Nitrate.

Pyrometallurgy: Roasting, Smelting, Refining & Electrowinning

O.K., now an easy, cheap, way to this is simply mix the Gold/Copper with an "oxidizing agent" such as Sodium Nitrate. That will get the job done. However, the Copper is sort of "locked up" inside the Gold so the Nitrate can't really get at it. Hey, we solve that problem by melting the whole mess.

If you want to leach gold you need an oxidizing environment (add chlorine gas or clorox) until you reach an ORP of 1000mV, at a Ph of about 5, hopefully warm temperature and you will leach gold. Once in solution, separate liquid from solids, reduce the ORP to 100 -500 mV using NaHSO3 and your gold will precipitate.

Dissolving Ore?

The problem with using acids like this with "gold ore" is that other metals are almost always present in the ore with the gold, so once you dissolve the gold into solution, other metals are also spoiling the mix, which makes removing the gold even harder to do. Sulfuric Acid will "not" dissolve gold. It is used mainly in "electrowinning".
