The mining techniques used in the Gold Rush evolved over time. This evolution tells a much more complex story than it seems at first glance; the change in mining techniques reveals the myth of the Gold Rush. In legend, the Gold Rush was where a poor farmer from New York or Pennsylvania could go, "strike it rich", and return home a wealthy man.
Missouri began mining coal in the 1840s and was the first commercial coal mining state west of the Mississippi River. Most of the early mines were underground and have since been abandoned. Surface mining didn't start in Missouri until the 1930s. By the '1960s, the majority of the coal produced in the state came from surface mines.
Lode mining began in the Boise Basin in the 1860's and would continue for decades, keeping the camps of the area from dying out as placer mining waned. Lode mining would never reach the scale of early placer mining however, and Idaho City's population would continue to decrease throughout the latter part of the 1800's
