A milling attachment for the 9" lathe 04-18-2021, 02:31 PM In the last few days, there's been talk of posting more projects, as well as milling on the lathe, so I thought I'd finally take the time to post this milling attachment (a.k.a. vertical slide). I don't have a mill yet, so this comes in handy for things I can't do on the shaper.
The vise block was made from a chunk of cast-iron ~1" thick from a scrapped arbor press table. It was carefully bored to fit the sleeve and then split with a 1/8" slotting saw on the lathe using the milling table from Photo #1. Overall, this milling attachment works pretty well and is usually rigid enough for what I do.
The SBL milling attachment fits on the cross slide in place of the compound. The compound is removed and the milling attachment is put in its place. Having said that, they have a certain amount of collector appeal on eBay. I would suggest selling it and using the money to buy something more capable.
A CNC lathe in action axes are the Z-axis for removing material from the material's diameter and the X-axis for controlling the depth of cut and removing material across the face of the part. Both of these are linear axes. The material being removed by a CNC lathe machine comes off much more quickly than on a manual lathe.
Before I bought my Mill-Drill I had made a attachment for my 10" Heavy SB lathe. It was made from 4"x4"x 3/8" thick angle iron and with side plates of 3/8" CR. To mount I made the round piece to fit the hole where my compound was mounted in. In addition I drilled and tapped for a couple more mounting bolts.
