The Mancos Shale is exposed in the southwestern corner of the quadrangle and along Trout and Oak Creeks in the central and southeastern parts of the quadrangle, respectively (Bass and others, 1955). It is composed of gray to dark-gray marine shale interbedded with light-gray to light-brown fine-grained sandstone beds (Bass and others, 1955).

Oil Shale and Tar Sands

Unconventional for a Reason. Oil shale is a form of sedimentary rock that contains kerogen, which is released as a petroleum-like liquid when the rock is heated. Tar sands are a combination of clay, sand, water and bitumen, …

Sandstone

Sandstone is a sedimentary rock made of grains of sand (defined as 1/16 mm to 2 mm sized particles) that have been naturally cemented together. Grains in sandstones are unfused, and some of these grains can be dislodged by rubbing across the rock. Sandstone represents ancient stream, deltaic, or beach deposits. Uses for sandstone include ...

What are sedimentary rocks? | U.S. Geological Survey

The smallest grains are called clay, then silt, then sand. Grains larger than 2 millimeters are called pebbles. Shale is a rock made mostly of clay, siltstone is made up of silt-sized grains, sandstone is made of sand-sized clasts, and conglomerate is made of pebbles surrounded by a matrix of sand or mud. Biologic Sedimentary Rocks:

Comparing the Pore Networks of Coal, Shale, and Tight Sandstone …

Transitional upper carboniferous Shanxi Formation coal-bearing strata in Qinshui Basin have been proven to be a set of mixed unconventional gas-bearing reservoirs forming a multi-superimposed gas system that consists of multiple independent fluid pressure systems vertically through the strata. An experimental protocol was designed to …

The Density of Common Rocks and Minerals

In crystalline rocks like granite, which have tight, interlocking mineral grains, porosity is normally quite low (less than 1 percent). On the other end of the spectrum is sandstone, with its large, individual sand …

Shale

Shale is a sedimentary rock composed of very fine clay particles. Clay forms from the decomposition of the mineral feldspar. Other minerals present in shale are quartz, mica, pyrite, and organic matter.

Coalbed methane (CBM) in the overlying strata of coal mines is recognized as an important alternative clean energy source. Under constant and cyclic loading of overlying strata, the mechanical response of sandstone is vital in determining the best stress-relief CBM exploitation position.
