Gold mining in New Mexico really took off in the late 1800s, with an important strike in the Elizabethtown–Mount Baldy area, near Eagle Nest. Others occurred around Pinos Altos, Silver City, Mogollón, the Jémez Mountains, the Caballo Mountains, and elsewhere. Most deposits were small, however, and soon exhausted.
13-05-2017· Pinos Altos: located just several miles north of Silver City, the district is basically a dry placer gold deposit. It has three gulches rich in gold including Whiskey, Santo Domingo, and Rich. Please understand that many areas in New Mexico are private lands; some of them are for the military, and others are Indian Reservations.

The first shipments of copper to Mexico were made in 1801. Gold was discovered in the Ortiz Mountains at Old Placers in 1828. New Placers was discovered in 1839, and before 1846 minor deposits of placer gold were found at Taos and Abiquiu and in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains (Prince, 1883, p. 243).

The Old Placers are located southwest of Santa Fe. Delores and Cunningham were productive gulches for small scale prospectors using drywashers. Nearby are the New Placers, which was known for producing very high purity gold. Pinos Altos is a dry placer district just a few miles north of Silver City.

Because of this, you will want to perfect your gold panning technique, and perhaps consider using a Gold Cube or other equipment that is great for recovering very fine river gold.

It is an old gold mining camp on the Mokulmne River. In the past, it was accessibly only by horseback.
