The Shondoni mine was commissioned by Mining, its owner, in 2013 to replace the Middelbult mine, which was depleting its coal reserves. The mine was initially planned to begin operating and replace Middelbult in 2015. However, it wasn't until 2018 that Shondoni began operating.
