The QAPF Diagram The chapter Quartz as a Rock-Forming Mineral introduced the QAPF diagram as a means to visualize and memorize the classification of igneous rocks based on their content of the minerals quartz, alkali-feldspar, plagioclase, and foids. This chapter serves to fully assign rock types to all fields in the diagram.
At first sight the QAPF diagram is intimidating because of the large number of fields and names. In reality it is simple because only a small number of essential names are employed (gabbro, monzonite, syenite, diorite, granite, and anorthosite) which are combined (e.g., monzogabbro) or have a mineral prefix added (e.g., quartz syenite).

There are 2 QAPF diagrams, one for coarse grained or intrusive igneous rocks, one for fine grained or extrusive igneous rocks. They mostly have similar field divisions, so most volcanic rocks have a corresponding plutonic rock of equivalent mineralogy (for example, rhyolite and granite).
