Speaking at the launch Narendra Raval, the chairperson of Simba Cement Uganda Ltd promised to crush cement prices in the market to UGX25,000 per 50kg bag. Today cement retails at UGX26,000 down from between UGX36,000-UGX40,000 a year ago.
Construction of the main factory was expected to begin in late 2012 and last approximately one year. Commercial production of cement was expected to begin soon after the factory was commissioned. Start-up costs were estimated at about UGX:1 trillion (about US$400 million at that time).
In 2018, HCL opened a new US$40 million cement factory along the Tororo-Mbale-Soroti Road, with production capacity of 850,000 tonnes (936,965 tons) annually, to match the output from Kasese District. The new factory will increase total output for Hima Cement Uganda Limited to 1,900,000 tonnes (2,094,391 tons) annually.
